Welsh Cyclo-Cross League Round 5

It's Saturday night in Carmarthen and there is a cross race in Carmarthen. Even some of the locals seem interested. There are a few very dark corners and the dew is beginning to settle. What could possibly go wrong? In my case, quite a lot.

The course was described as technical (read some tight turns round a few trees, steps and a nice off camber grassy slope) but the even more technical nature of crossing a concrete velodrome seemed to catch a few riders out. Thankfully Paul Bennett persuaded the organisers that barriers at the bottom end of a descent were not the best idea.

To make sure we had the full benefit of the dark the senior and vet race start was delayed. (I think they were hoping it was going to rain). It was then the wise words of Mr Jeremiah came back to me – "I would ride with a front light at least". The advice seemed to have been followed by quite a few riders. Those of us without lights soon found it was hard to get any sensible lines as the grass started to cut up. With numerous crashes gaps soon started appearing and there wasn't much chance to close anyone down. It was a bit like riding in mist – you could see a couple of riders in front but anyone in the shadows looked the same.

As for the results in the senior race Adam King continued his fine form coming in 4th, Mark Davies was 8th. Paul Bennett was 19th, me 24th and Phil Caunt 49th. Unfortunately Mat Thompson crashed out. Isabelle Bennett was 4th in the U10 girls, James Tillett 6th and Sam Tillett 10th in the U14 boys, Elizabeth Bennett 3rd in the U14 girls and Emily Tillett 5th in the U14 girls. Will Worrall won the senior race at least a minute ahead of Joe Lally.

I must admit that I started to think the course had been designed for the amusement of the spectators as I came off for about the fourth time. In retrospect this race just reminded me to practise more – a lot more.
